How Are Our Whey-Based Protein Supplements Made?

Egg-based protein supplements have been around since the 1950s. As the health craze started in the 1970s and ‘80s, the interest in fast, efficient protein started to really take off. Protein powders have been around for more than half a century now, but have you ever wondered how they’re made? Without revealing any of our proprietary secrets, here’s a quick course on how protein supplements are manufactured. (We’ll be talking about whey-based protein powders and shakes like we make here at OhYeah! Soy-based protein supplements are made using a very different method, because milking soybeans takes very tiny hands.)

What Is Whey?

Whey protein occurs naturally in milk products. Whey is called a “complete” protein because it is easy to digest and contains all essential amino acids. It includes a high amount of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), essential for muscle building and recovery.

How Is It Made?

It all starts with the cow! Cows are milked and the milk is transported to a processing facility. Like many foods, raw milk might look simple but is actually made up of many parts. There’s fat, protein, water, calcium, vitamins, minerals, and many more. Whey protein is actually a byproduct of making cheese. Enzymes are added to produce cheese curds, and what is left over is whey. (You’ll never hear Little Miss Muffet and her curds and whey the same way again.) This whey is in liquid form, which is pasteurized and dried into a powder.

What We Do With It

This powdered whey is the base for the products we make here at OhYeah! Of course, we don’t sell you unflavored whey, because most people don’t have a taste for it. Some people say it has no flavor, some say it tastes milky, others say cheesy. One commenter suggested that it tastes like “a cross between cheese, milk, flour, and feet.” It’s no wonder we flavor it!

And Flavor It We Do

We pride ourselves on having the absolute best flavors out there, because we know that if our protein powder tastes bad it’s just going to sit on the counter without anyone using it. Our chocolate milkshakes protein powders have cocoa powder, and we sweeten our OhYeah! Victory protein bars with agave syrup, cane juice extract, and other natural and artificial flavors. We’re dedicated to providing the absolute best flavor out there so that our Pumpkin Pie One Bars really taste like pumpkin pie!

Whey is a wonder food, providing a quick and easy way to get your protein when you need it. Check out all of our whey-based protein supplements right here!
