Whey protein occurs naturally in milk products. Whey is called a “complete” protein because it is easy to digest and contains all essential amino acids. It includes a high amount of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), essential for muscle building and recovery.
It all starts with the cow! Cows are milked and the milk is transported to a processing facility. Like many foods, raw milk might look simple but is actually made up of many parts. There’s also a significant danger in eating raw eggs. Eggs can also carry salmonella enteritidis, a sickness that causes fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. When you are infected with this bacteria and have these symptoms, you’re going to be in bad shape for seven to ten days, meaning that you’re not going to be exercising much during that time. But to answer the question, is it necessary to use a protein supplement to build muscle? It depends on your level of working out and how much muscles you’re looking to build. Which brings us to this question...
Bodybuilders are by far the most frequent users of protein. Because they are most interested in building muscle, they go through a lot of protein in a short amount of time. Trying to consume all of the protein they want in the form of solid food is impractical and often too expensive. To get enough protein to bodybuild, they’d have to have five meals a day and spend half their time cooking! Because protein shakes are so easily digestible, they get into the system faster...which means weightlifters are less likely to vomit their last protein-rich meal during extreme exercise.

But there are some instances in which you shouldn’t be using protein supplements. While it might seem unorthodox, let’s take a look at who shouldn’t be buying today.
If you’re a strict vegan, it’s fairly obvious that you won’t be choosing our low-carb protein powder. Our protein comes from whey, and that comes from milk. We can’t suggest soy protein either, so it’s probably best if you simply get your protein from food sources such as beans.
We’re not saying that pregnant women shouldn’t eat protein; they most certainly should! Pregnant women also need exercise, so they’ll need more protein. What we are saying is that a woman should talk to her doctor before starting any supplements, and that includes protein shakes and powders. If you are pregnant, feel free to take our supplements to your doctor and let them take a look at the label and make recommendations.
Protein needs somewhere to go. If your plan is to sit at your desk all day, sit in the car during your commute, sit down for supper, and sit on the couch all night, you shouldn't be pounding the protein powder. People are often curious to find out if protein supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The answer is no. Because protein powders are supplements, they fall into the food division of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). This means that they are under different regulations than drugs, in that they are considered safe until proven otherwise. (Drugs, on the other hand, are considered to be unsafe until proven otherwise). If our competitor's product safety was questioned, that’s when the FDA would step in and test it as a food (some competitor’s products have been found to have unhealthy amounts of lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, steroids, hormones, and narcotics.)
Lucky for you, we have our protein powders tested by a third party, NSF® Certified For Sport, to ensure that illegal substances aren’t in our products. We constantly endeavor to make sure our products would pass every safety test available. When your health is on the line, we won’t take chances.
Like everything in life, you’ve got to weigh the pros and the cons. Are protein supplements cheaper than your average steak? Yes. Are they cheaper than a can of beans? No. Do you want to drink a can of beans when you’re at the gym? Probably not.

A few blogs ago we wrote about some people who shouldn’t push too much protein in their diet: those who aren’t active, are pregnant, or are vegan would want to think twice before drinking a protein powder.
Most of the time the people who need protein are those who are looking to add lots of muscle to their frame. But there are some people that need extra protein who aren’t necessarily weight lifters or even athletes. (Please note that we’re not necessarily saying that the protein should come from supplements; sometimes these groups simply need to increase protein in their diet. As usual, talk to your doctor about the amount of protein you need and from where you should get it.)
Older people need more protein in their diet than you might think. The human body processes protein less efficiently as we age. Also, our bodies lose muscle more easily as we get older, a process known as sarcopenia. Protein has been shown to increase bone density and is considered as important as Vitamin D at keeping bones strong.
All that increase in height and weight means teens need to build muscle! Teens need plenty of protein because they’re more prone to building muscle more now than at any other part of their lives. They also have gym class and are likely to be involved in school sports. The amount teens need varies depending on what stage of development they’re at.
